<수궁가가 조아라>는 이해하기 어려운 말들을 쉽게 풀고, 지금의 시대상을 담아 오늘날의 ‘판+소리극’으로 재창작한 공연이다. ‘우리가 살고 있는 이 시대를 한 판 놀이로 풍자한다.
달리고 달려도 세상 살기 막막한 토끼가 수궁이라는 이상향을 꿈꾸며 지금 이 순간에도 이 땅을 떠나자 생각하는 우리의 모습이 스쳐간다. 한편 수국에서 평생을 살아 온 자라는 책임질 것들이 많아 훌쩍 떠날 수조차 없는, 또 다른 우리의 자화상을 비춘다.
“토끼가 수궁에 갔다 온 이야기를 듣기 위해 수많은 동물들이 한자리에 모였다. 북치는 고수 토끼와 함께 이곳 저곳을 유랑하며 이야기 판을 벌이는 토끼는 스스로 ‘목숨을 구한다’하여 일명 ‘구명(救命)토끼’. 토끼는 3년 전 자라와의 첫 만남에서부터 수궁에 가게 된 이야기를 풀어놓기 시작한다. 아무리 달려도 늘 제자리인 토끼는 자라를 만나 수국으로 벼슬 하러 가기를 꿈꾸지만, 막상 도착한 수국은 토끼의 간만 노리는 더 썩은 세상이다. 토끼는 번뜩 꾀를 내어 용왕을 속이고 세상 밖으로 탈출하는데 성공한다. 그러나 이번엔 수궁에 묶인 몸인 자라가 꺼이꺼이 울며 토끼에게 속사정을 이야기하기 시작하는데…”
Based on the traditional “Pansori Sugungga”, “Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” (meaning “I like Sugungga”) is a fine work of contemporary Pansori, transforming its original text into modern Korean language and reflecting the current times. It changed the dead language of pasori to be comprehensible and to reflect modern phases. JoAhRa played the role of ‘Rabbit’ and other characters, as a satire toward our world to sympathize with today’s audiences.ﾠ
While the Rabbit, Turtle, and the Dragon King remaining from the origin, its story and plot has significantly changed. Instead of telling the Rabbit’s journey to Sugung, it focuses on the hidden stories of Rabbit and Turtle who struggles to survive in their own way, depicting a desperate world. It also suggests the opposite or contradictory power: the world of the sea and the earth where the Turtle deceiving the Rabbit for its liver and the Rabbit tricking the Dragon King to keep her life and the liver from him.
In a satirical sense and humor, “Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” recalls many aspects of Korea today. Two rabbits, a storyteller and singer “Gumyong (meaning ‘life-saving’) Tokki” JoAhRa, and a drummer “Gosu Tokki” are travelling around to tell a story by singing and dancing and making fool of the world. JoAhRa switches from one character to another and creates dynamics between her and the audience. .
“토끼와 자라의 말은 낯설지 않다. 토끼의 모습에선 화려한 이력에도 불구하고 여전히 취업난에 시달리는 N포 세대의 자화상이 비춰진다. 자라의 모습에선 수십 년 동안 자식 뒷바라지하다가 정작 자신을 돌보지 못한 부모 세대의 시린 단면이 드러난다. 토끼와 자라는 서로 속고 속이는 관계에 놓여있지만 각자의 시스템에서 살아가는 ‘을’들이었다.”
