“수궁가가 조아라”에는 서로 대립되는 가치들이 끊임없이 경합한다. 물 속 세상과 물 밖 세상, 토끼를 속이는 자라와 용왕을 속이는 토끼, 간이 필요한 자라와 간을 절대로 줄 수 없는 토끼… 그런데 토끼와 자라의 대립은 좀 석연치 않은 구석이 있다. 자라는 왜 토끼를 죽음으로 몰아야 하고, 토끼는 왜 자라를 미워해야 할까. 둘 다 어쩌면 짜여진 시스템 속에서 열심히 살아가는 ‘을’들일 뿐인데.
Based on the traditional “Pansori Sugungga”, “Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” (meaning “I like Sugungga”) is a fine work of contemporary Pansori, transforming its original text into modern Korean language and reflecting the current times. “Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” changed difficult words to understand easier and re-created text to reflect modern phases. Pansori singer JoAhRa acted as ‘Rabbit’ and other various characters, as she satirized our world to sympathize with audiences directly.ﾠ
While the characters, Rabbit, Turtle, and the Dragon King, are remained the same, the story and the plot had been significantly changed. Rather than the original Rabbit’s journey to Sugung, it focuses on the hidden stories of Rabbit and Turtle, who struggle to survive in their own way, depicting a desperate world. It also suggests the opposite or contradictory power: the world of the sea and the earth, Turtle who deceives a rabbit and Rabbit who fools the Dragon King, and Turtle who desperately needs the liver and Rabbit who never gives it.
In a satirical sense and humor, “Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” recalls many aspects of Korea today. Two rabbits, a storyteller and singer “Gumyong (meaning ‘life-saving’) Tokki” JoAhRa, and a drummer “Gosu Tokki”, are travelling around, telling a story, singing and dancing, and making fool of the world. JoAhRa changes into every character and guides the audience to react immediately and dynamically.
“적절한 현대의 말로 맛을 살린 “수궁가가 조아라”는 물 흐르듯이 관객참여를 이끌어 내며 이야기를 전개해 나갔다. 도입부 부터 흥미롭게 관객의 관심을 유도하고, 중간중간 객석 과의 호흡을 이어가며, 자연스럽게 흥을 주고 받는 판소리의 형식을 살려 공연에 몰입을 더해주었다. 마지막 장면 또한 인상적이다. 원작 “수궁가”에서 토끼는 여러 번 죽을 고비를 만나지만 특유의 기지를 발휘해 어려움에서 벗어나 “….잘먹고 잘 살았다더라~” 하는 끝을 보여 준다. 이에 반해 자라의 이야기는 나오지 않는다. 하지만 조아라의 “수궁가”는 인물간의 관계를 회복시켜 따뜻한 그림을 그려내었다. 대립되는 인물인 토끼와 자라가 서로의 사정을 불쌍히 여기고 함께 꾀를 내어 토끼의 똥을 간이라고 속이고 용왕에게 가져다 주는 것이다. 물론 그 이후는 모른다. 용왕이 토끼똥을 의심없이 먹었는지, 용왕의 병이 나았는지, 자라는 잘 살고 있을지. 하지만 구명 토선생이 주는 메시지는 확실했고, 그것은 관객들에게 색다른 감동을 전해주었다. “이 험한 세상 살아갈 재주 다 있으니 세상 꼴 내 꼴 잘 살펴보고 다 같이 살아가는 건 어떻소?”

“Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” created a warm scene to restore the relationship between the characters. A rabbit and a turtle who opposed each other instead pities one another and creates a wit. They end up deceiving the Dragon King by giving him rabbit poop, which the King believes it to be the liver. We do not know what the King has done with it nor whether he recovered from his illness or not, but the message of the wise rabbit was clear enough to allow the audience to have their own ways of enjoy the show. “We each have our own capabilities to survive in this harsh world. Trust that, look out for one another and let’s live it out together!”
