2014 (Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa 2014)

Based on the traditional “Pansori Sugungga”, “Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” (meaning “I like Sugungga”) is a fine work of contemporary Pansori, transforming its original text into modern Korean language and reflecting the current times. “Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” changed difficult words to understand easier and re-created text to reflect modern phases. Pansori singer JoAhRa acted as ‘Rabbit’ and other various characters, as she satirized our world to sympathize with audiences directly.

While the characters, Rabbit, Turtle, and the Dragon King, are remained the same, the story and the plot had been significantly changed. Rather than the original Rabbit’s journey to Sugung, it focuses on the hidden stories of Rabbit and Turtle, who struggle to survive in their own way, depicting a desperate world. It also suggests the opposite or contradictory power: the world of the sea and the earth, Turtle who deceives a rabbit and Rabbit who fools the Dragon King, and Turtle who desperately needs the liver and Rabbit who never gives it.

In a satirical sense and humor, “Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” recalls many aspects of Korea today. Two rabbits, a storyteller and singer “Gumyong (meaning ‘life-saving’) Tokki” JoAhRa, and a drummer “Gosu Tokki”, are travelling around, telling a story, singing and dancing, and making fool of the world. JoAhRa changes into every character and guides the audience to react immediately and dynamically.

“Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” created a warm scene to restore the relationship between the characters. A rabbit and a turtle who opposed  each other instead pities one another and creates a wit. They end up deceiving the Dragon King by giving him rabbit poop, which the King believes it to be the liver. We do not know what the King has done with it nor whether he recovered from his illness or not, but the message of the wise rabbit was clear enough to allow the audience to have their own ways of enjoy the show. “We each have our own capabilities to survive in this harsh world. Trust that, look out for one another and let’s live it out together!”

2015 (Inevitable 2015)

“Inevitable” is an autobiographical monologue which shows how JoAhRa as Pansori singer and actor explores her father JoJeongHyeon, a popular comedian in 1980-90s, and discovers her own ways of being an artist. “Inevitable” points to merging of style formats, including documentaries, plays, Pansori, soundscape, and video.

The show is in a way the mantra of comedian JoJeongHyeon at his peak of career. The performance experiments with ‘inevitable’ relationships, situations, and curvature in life with the topics of ‘Father and Daughter’, ‘Clown and Laugh’ and ‘Media extensions’ covered through JoJeongHyeon and JoAhRa’s relationship.

In 2015, BodySoundSpeakJoAhRa had been funded by Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture for the multi-art production of “Inevitable”.

“The moment JoAhRa opens her tight-closed eyes – no longer does she remain a good daughter but has then appear to have become a grown-up. She’s even put aside a secure reconciliation with her father. That’s where the audience meets the best part of the play: a selfie-video she made on the visit to her father after a sleepless night! Shedding tears of vexation because of her unchanging weakness of mind and father’s stubbornness. In fact, the ‘inevitables’ should be traces of oppression she has gone through and the difficulty of releasing it. JoAhRa seems to mostly be interested in the release. Release from herself, release from the father, release from men, release from traditions, release from the institutions, release from death. It shall be here themes to break off the chains of oppression, wipe away tears and get on with as herself! The destiny of those with the “calling” to become a clown in our days.”

2016 (Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa 2016)

Based on the traditional “Pansori Sugungga”, “Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” (meaning “I like Sugungga”) is a fine work of contemporary Pansori, transforming its original text into modern Korean language and reflecting the current times. It changed the dead language of pasori to be comprehensible and to reflect modern phases. JoAhRa played the role of ‘Rabbit’ and other  characters, as a satire toward our world to sympathize with today’s audiences.

While the Rabbit, Turtle, and the Dragon King remaining from the origin, its story and plot has  significantly changed. It also suggests the opposite or contradictory power: the world of the sea and the earth where the Turtle deceiving the Rabbit for its liver and the Rabbit tricking the Dragon King to keep her life and the liver from him.

In a satirical sense and humor, “Pansori – Sugunggaga JoAhRa” recalls many aspects of Korea today. JoAhRa switches from one character to another and creates dynamics between her and the audience. .

“The dialogue between ‘Rabbit’ and ‘Turtle’ is not merely lines in a play. It portrays our young generation suffering from job crisis despite their colorful resume in Rabbit. Turtle is a phase of our parents’ generation supporting their children but never dare to do anything for themselves. While the Rabbit and Turtle are both in positions to deceive one another, they are pathetic fighters struggling to survive inside a given system.”
